Georgian Music Promotion Reception Held in Rome
n the framework of President Salome Zourabichvili’s official visit to the Holy See, a reception was held to promote Georgian culture and polyphonic folkloric songs at the Palazzo della Cancellaria with the participation of the Basiani Music Ensemble. During the event, the President addressed guests, which included diplomats accredited to the Vatican, about Georgian culture, traditions and values:
“Georgia has been a country of tolerance for centuries, which is one of our hallmarks. Today tolerance is under threat in many ways. We also see polarization in Georgia, which we must oppose by sharing common values. Strengthening these values, we need solidarity and support in many areas, because Georgia is a small country.
“300 years ago, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani arrived in the Vatican and held an audience with the Pope. Even then, he was trying to establish ties between Georgia and the Vatican.
“Today Sulkhan-Saba is considered the father of Georgian diplomacy and is a symbol of connection with Christian Europe.
“Today, we present you a Georgian polyphonic song, which is a part of the unique Georgian culture. I am sure that with these songs it will become at least a little clear what was, what is and what will be Georgia!
“I hope that tonight will make you want to visit Georgia.”
